Wendy Treon's 10 Tips -September 7th Meeting

10 Tips to Help a Teen’s Mental Health

  1. Model Healthy Coping Skills: Examine how you handle stress - is this how you want your daughter to cope as well?
  2. Watch for Behavioral Changes: Is your daughter withdrawing from friends and family, changing their routine? Check in with her and let her know you are there.
  3. Have Open and Honest Communication: Your daughter needs to know that they can come to you for any issue and that they will be supported and listened to.
  4. Create a Routine and Have Clear Boundaries: Uncertainty leads to stress! Predictability can reduce frustrations for both you and her.
  5. Let Your Daughter Know She is Loved and Supported: This will increase the level of safety and security that your daughter will feel at home.
  6. Provide Positive Feedback and Encouragement: Your daughter will feel a sense of pride and will be more likely to repeat the behavior.
  7. 7. Encourage Physical Activity: Help your daughter find something active they enjoy doing. Activity greatly improves mental health!
  8. 8. Openly Talk About Feelings and Emotions: This will teach that feelings and emotions are normal!
  9. 9. Involve Them in Decision Making: Including your daughter in decision making will help her to feel valued in the home.
  10. Get Professional Help if Needed: Do not be afraid to ask for help!
